Student Advisory Committee to the Auraria Board

Michelle Sprowl

A heart for the environment and a soul in policy, rule my life.  Born in Dallas, I knew deep down that I would move west. During the late summer of 2005, I packed up and made the journey to Denver to start a new chapter of my life. Metro State College of Denver was my motivation to choose Colorado, and in return, has become the fuel for my internal strength and direction.

I have studied Environmental Science for four years at Metro, and will continue on to study Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Once enrolled, I quickly found environmentally conscious peers and founded the Metro State Environmental Science Organization dedicated to promoting environmental responsibility on campus and at home. Since then we have organized three recycling events including Recycle Extravaganza during the fall of ’08. At the Extravaganza, within two days, we recycled 3.5 tons of electronics, 2 dumpsters of cardboard and plastics, along with a trailer packed with clothing for Denver Rescue Mission, while enjoying live music powered by a donated Solar Trailer. Spring of ’09, we donated a native garden to Auraria Campus located just south of the Science Buiilding and brought local scientists to speak about careers in sustainability. The pride from these successful events is overwhelming.

During the General Election of Spring ’09, I was approached about an opening on the Student Advisory Committee to the Auraria Board (SACAB) and the temptation to be involved in higher administration decisions and policies was too great to pass up. My term began July 1, 2009 and quickly I was appointed the Student Representative to the Auraria Board. This responsibility involves sitting on the Auraria Board representing all of the Auraria student body on important administrative decisions.

Please feel free to contact me about any issues, questions, or concerns involving the campus or student life.

Hannah Kaufman

Hannah Kaufman is a SACAB Representative for Metropolitan State College of Denver and the Public Relations Officer for the 2009-2010 year. This is her first term serving SACAB. She was a Senator for the Metro State SGA in 2008-2009. In addition to SACAB and her schoolwork, Hannah is also a student worker for Metro State's Office of the Vice President for Student Services.

Hannah is a Spanish major with a minor in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, she aspires to teach English as a Second Language at the elementary school level. She graduated from Cherry Creek High School and attended Colorado State University before transferring to Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2006.

Andrew Pattison

Andrew Pattison received his B.A. in Ecology, Evolution, and Animal Behavior from Skidmore College and went on to work as a conservation biologist for New York State and The Nature Conservancy in both New York and Colorado. Andy later taught Biology and Environmental Science at a progressive charter school in Santa Fe, NM and was the Science Program Coordinator at Blue Academy, a non-profit eco-tourism company he helped launch.

Andy moved to Denver in 2003 in order to complete a Master in Public Administration with a focus in Environmental Policy, Management, and Law from the University of Colorado Denver. For two years, Andy worked as a researcher at the Wirth Chair in Environmental and Community Development Policy supporting the Wirth Chair's efforts in local and statewide sustainable development policy advocacy. Andy's Master's thesis involved working with the Colorado Municipal League and dozens of Colorado municipalities to develop and author a book entitled "Energy Management and Conservation: Municipal Best Practices".

While pursuing his PhD in Public Affairs at UCD Andy is continuing his research in municipal-scale sustainable development policy centered on energy and climate issues. The working title of his dissertation is "Beliefs, Learning, and Policy Entrepreneurs: A Examination of Local Climate Policy Development".

In addition to serving as a UCD Student Representative on SACAB and the Chair of the SACAB Sustainable Campus Program Subcommittee, Andy is also a fellow in the Center for Progressive Leadership's Colorado Political Leaders Fellowship program and a fellow in the Denver Community Leadership Forum. He also currently serves on the Colorado Municipal League's Energy and Environmental Sustainability Committee and the UCD Campus Council on Sustainability.

Andy has worked and volunteered on dozens of local, state, and national political campaigns in Colorado and the rocky mountain region. He is an avid hiking, backpacker, and naturalist and plays ultimate Frisbee here in Denver.

Eli Rodriguez

My name is Eli Rodriguez, and I will be Vice Chair on the Student Advisory Committee to the Auraria Board this 2009-2010 academic year. I am a Denver native, raised by my single mother in West Denver. I graduated from an intercity high school, West High School, in 2003. Being the first of my siblings to graduate I was expected to start attending college. I started at the Community College of Denver in the spring of 2004, but not getting involved and being faced with adversity and many other personal challenges I dropped out. The next three years life was real hard for me. I wasn't getting any younger and my life was passing me by. The summer of 2008 I enrolled back at CCD and made a commitment to myself to be the creator of my life. Life is defiantly what you make it! Since I've been back and having a taste of the real world I now value my education, and appreciate all my second chances at life. Being involved with the TRIO Scholars, being an orientation leader, working as a FYE Work study, and attending events such as the Diversity Leadership Retreat, and attending the CCD Foundation event "An Evening Out" have helped me grow and made me a leader in my community. I plan to graduate from CCD in the spring of 2010 with an associate in business management. I will then continue working on my undergrad either at UCD or DU. I am excited to embark on this endeavor, learning as much as I can while helping make a difference in my community.
