Campus Mural

Completed!

If you get an opportunity, stop by the Auraria Early Learning Center (AELC) located at Ninth St. Historic Park and Colfax Avenue to view the intriguing mural painted by recent Rocky Mountain College of Arts and Design graduate, Daniel Chavez. Daniel has been working on this intricate mural since 2004, while employed as a Teacher's aide and Martial arts instructor at the AELC. In a recent interview, Daniel stated that his inspiration for the mural came from the diverse cultural backgrounds of the children attending the AELC. The mural incorporates images from Mesa Verde National Park, Maccu Piccu, South America; Rio de Janero, Brazil; downtown Denver skyline (complete with windows that glow in the dark!); Nigeria, Africa; Petra, Jordan; Mongolia; Ethiopia; Abu Simbel, Egypt; Henan Province, China; Angkor, Cambodia; Bangkok, Thailand; Bavarian Alps, Germany; Tula Hidalgo, Mexico; Medellin, Colombia; Urubamba Valley, Peru.

This one-of-a-kind work of art was a labor of love for Daniel and was made possible by paint donations from parents and employees. Mary McCain, Director of the ELC states, "It has been wonderful for the children and parents to be able to watch the progression of the painting from start to finish. Parents and children that have left will actually come back to visit and check on the progress of the mural."
